Allegory: Christian and Hopeful Escaping from Doubting Castle
19th Century Steel Engraving

This is an unusual depiction of an allegorical situation. It shows Christian in white with a star on his forehead, and Hopeful in armor with a shield in one hand and a giant key in the other. A giant looks out from the dark, grim castle they have just climbed out of. The sky and Moon are depicted with particular skill in this fascinating old engraving, drawn by H. Melville and engraved by J. Tingle. The print is in excellent condition with no discoloration or other damage. It is on heavy paper, and is blank on the reverse. The plate impression is clearly visible. The margins are bigger than shown here, the print being about 10 inches by 6-1/2 inches; the image area is 5-1/2 inches by 3-3/4 inches. There are four pinholes near the edge, well away from the image area, where it was stitched into the original volume. Your satisfaction is guaranteed.
