Martin Van Buren
1856 Steel Engraving
Martin Van Buren, 8th President of the United States, is depicted in this nearly flawless portrait from 1856. Polk was a governor from New York before being president; he mediated the Caroline Affair with Great Britain; and the destruction of the Caroline -- the huge paddle-wheel in flames -- is dramatically shown in a smaller frame at the bottom of the print. This portrait is surrounded by an elaborate border topped with an inkwell, and a facsimile signature at the bottom. The print is in excellent condition with no discoloration or other damage. It is on heavy paper, and is blank on the reverse. The original tissue guard is present. The margins are bigger than shown here (there is no part of the image clipped off; my scanner sometimes gives that appearance), the print being 10 inches by 6-1/2 inches; the image area is about 7-1/2 inches by 5-1/2 inches. Your satisfaction is guaranteed.
