St. Severinus and Odoacer
19th Century Engraving
Odoacer (c. 435-493) was a germanic chieftain, a mercinary for Rome. He deposed Romulus Augustulus, the last Roman emperor of the West; the date 476 is often accepted as the end of the West Roman Empire. Here St. Severinus in his rustic monks' garments speaks with the hulking Odoacer, who resembles Arnold Schwartzenegger. A crucifix stands in the corner. The print was published by Selmar Hess of New York in about 1880. It is in excellent condition with no foxing anywhere except for some extremely faint spots on the outside edges of the margin. The original tissue guard is intact. The print is on heavy paper, and is blank on the reverse. The margins are bigger than shown here, the print being 10-3/4 inches by 7-3/4 inches; the image area is 7-1/4 inches by 6 inches. Your satisfaction is guaranteed.
