Celestial City
1800s Steel Engraving
This spectacular scene depicts shepherds looking over a canyon with gigantic waterfalls, and on a mountaintop in the far distance, a colossal city of the kind no living human has ever seen. The caption reads, "Then said the shepherds one to another, let us here shew the pilgrims the gates of the Celestial City, if they have skill to look through our prospective glass." The print, engraved by J.C. Bentley from a drawing by H. Melville, is in good condition with no discoloration. It is on heavy paper, and is blank on the reverse. The print is about 7 inches by 5 inches; the image area is 5-3/4 inches by 4-1/2 inches. There are three pinholes where it was stitched into the original volume that impinge on the image area. The holes are unobtrusive and the print overall looks fine. Your satisfaction is guaranteed.
